No active has more clinical evidence behind it than the retinoid family. They accelerate cell turnover, stimulate collagen, refine texture, fade pigmentation, and reverse UV induced damage. The problem is "retinol" has become a catch all for what is actually a spectrum of very different molecules.

How Retinoids Work

All retinoids work by converting to retinoic acid, the biologically active form. The key variable is how many conversion steps are required. Fewer steps means faster, stronger results. More steps means slower, gentler results.

Tretinoin (Retinoic Acid)

Prescription Only

Tretinoin is retinoic acid itself. It requires no conversion, which is why it works faster and more powerfully than any OTC retinoid. It is one of the few topically applied ingredients with robust clinical evidence for increasing dermal collagen production. The tradeoff is a significant adjustment period of 4 to 12 weeks.

Retinaldehyde (Retinal)

One Step from Retinoic Acid OTC

The strongest over the counter retinoid available. Delivers results comparable to low strength tretinoin with notably less irritation. Also has antimicrobial properties, making it particularly intelligent for acne prone skin.

Retinol

Two Steps from Retinoic Acid OTC

What most people mean when they say "retinoid." Slower acting and significantly milder. Start at 0.025 to 0.05%, use a few times per week, and build slowly over months. The appropriate starting point for most adults.

Retinyl Esters

Three+ Steps Gentlest

The mildest form. Unlikely to cause irritation but also unlikely to produce dramatic results. A sensible starting point for very sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol

Plant Derived Non Retinoid

Not a retinoid at all. Derived from the Babchi plant, it produces similar results through a different biological mechanism without the irritation. Suitable during pregnancy, for reactive skin, and can be used morning and evening without increasing photosensitivity.

Choosing Your Starting Point

New to retinoids: start with retinol at 0.025-0.05%, two nights a week. Reactive skin: start with retinyl esters or bakuchiol. Ready to step up: move to retinal. Significant concerns: ask a dermatologist about tretinoin.

Whatever you choose: use it at night, follow with SPF every morning, and give it at least 12 weeks. Retinoids reward patience and punish impatience in equal measure.
