Having good products is one thing. Knowing how to use them together is another. Some ingredient combinations work synergistically. Others conflict, creating irritation, instability, or simply canceling each other out. This guide removes the guesswork.
Combinations That Work Well Together
Vitamin C + SPF: Vitamin C neutralises free radicals generated by UV exposure, amplifying your sunscreen's protective effect.
Retinol + Niacinamide: Niacinamide soothes irritation, strengthens the barrier through ceramide synthesis, and supports the skin through retinoid adjustment.
AHAs + Hyaluronic Acid: Following an AHA with hyaluronic acid restores hydration to the freshly exfoliated surface.
Bakuchiol + Retinol: Clinical studies suggest bakuchiol can reduce retinol related irritation while both work toward collagen stimulating goals.
Peptides + Niacinamide: Both are gentle, barrier supportive, and work cumulatively. They don't conflict at any pH range.
Vitamin C (AM) + Retinol (PM): The classic split. Vitamin C protects during the day. Retinol repairs overnight. Together they address collagen, pigmentation, texture, and oxidative stress across 24 hours.
Combinations to Avoid or Separate
Retinol + AHAs or BHAs in the same routine: Both are exfoliating and potentially irritating. Alternate evenings rather than layering.
Pure L-Ascorbic Acid + high concentration Niacinamide: At high concentrations, these can react to form niacin, causing flushing. Split AM and PM.
Peptides + strong exfoliating acids in the same step: Low pH breaks down peptide bonds. Apply acid first, peptides after pH normalises.
Two different retinoids at the same time: Doesn't amplify results. Amplifies irritation. Choose one.
Vitamin C + benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide can oxidize vitamin C. Separate to AM and PM.
A Note on Layering Order
When in doubt, apply thinnest to thickest. pH dependent actives go on first, on dry skin, with time to work before anything else. Retinoids after serums but before moisturizer. SPF always last in the morning.
The best routine isn't the one with the most products. It's the one where every product has space to work.
